Sugary Drinks | Justice Dental | Lexington, Kentucky
Think Before Sugary Drinks!
Did you know that the average American consumes a variety of sugary drinks every day? 44.7 gallons of soda, 15.5 gallons of fruit and sports juices, and 10.3 gallons of tea each year, to be exact!
Sugary Drink Dangers
Before you twist the cap or pop the top, you may want to think about the dangers associated with some of our favorite drinks.
Soda, juices, and certain teas contain sugar and/or acids. Consumption of these beverages may lead to greater susceptibility to decay as a result of corrosion and enamel loss.
The combination of sugar and a low pH (acidity level of a substance) can result in erosion. Dental erosion is a demineralization process that weakens hard dental tissues, such as enamel. This process causes tooth structure to wear away due to the effects acid has on teeth, eventually leading to the breakdown of enamel.
In order to lessen the risk of dental concerns with these helpful hints:
- Decrease intake. Replace unhealthy drinks with water.
- Drink and be done. Avoid sipping a drink over a long period of time.
- Use a straw.
- Rinse with water after drinking a sugary, carbonated drink.
- Visit a dentist to maintain good dental health and prevent future problems.
